On Monday, Barbara Walters made an official announcement on “The View” that she will be a retired journalist in May 2014.

Walters has been on television for more than 50 years and now she will be able to “admire the gifted women” who will be taking her place.

After a short video spanning from the start of her career until today, Walters made a short remark to the audience of “The View.”

“A year from now, I plan to retire from appearing on television at all,” she said. “It has been an absolutely joyful, rewarding, challenging, fascinating, and occasionally, bumpy ride and I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m perfectly healthy. This is my decision. I’ve been thinking about it for a long time and this is what I want to do.”

Later, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined her and the show’s co-hosts. He talked about how Walters has changed journalism by asking tough questions and keeping the public informed.

Before watching the video of her retirement announcement, I remembered that I have a book about Walter’s life that I need to read. So, I guess that’ll be added to my summer reading list!

In the meantime, I look forward to watching her last segments on “The View” and learning more about her experiences as a broadcast journalist.

And although she doesn’t directly tie her Vine resume to the success of her recent job search, it makes her stand out.

Then It’s a Criminal Offense...

futurejournalismproject:

Under 18? Then It’s a Criminal Offense for You To Read Some News Sites

Via the Electronic Frontier Foundation:

As we’ve explained previously, in multiple cases the [Department of Justice] has taken the position that a violation of a website’s Terms of Service or an employer’s Terms of Use policy can be treated as a criminal act. And the House Judiciary Committee has floated a proposal that makes the DOJ’s position law, making it a crime to access a website for any “impermissible purpose.” For a number of reasons, including the requirements of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, many news sites have terms of service that prohibit minors from using their interactive services and sometimes even visiting their websites.

Take, for example, the Hearst Corporation’s family of publications. If you read the terms of use for the Houston Chronicle, the San Francisco Chronicle, or Popular Mechanics websites, you’ll find this language, screamed in all-caps:

“YOU MAY NOT ACCESS OR USE THE COVERED SITES OR ACCEPT THE AGREEMENT IF YOU ARE NOT AT LEAST 18 YEARS OLD.”

In the DOJ’s world, this means anyone under 18 who reads a Hearst newspaper online could hypothetically face jail time. But Hearst’s publications aren’t the only ones with overly restrictive usage terms. U-T San Diego and the Miami Herald have similar policies. Even NPR is guilty, saying teenagers can’t access their “services” (including the site, NPR podcasts and the media player) without a permission slip…

…Some sites must have recognized the problem and crafted their policies to only forbid users under the age of 13. These include the New York Times, the Boston Globe, and the Arizona Republic. NBCNews.com uses this wording:

“By using or attempting to use the Site or Services, you certify that you are at least 13 years of age or other required greater age for certain features and meet any other eligibility and residency requirements of the Site.”

This means that inquisitive 12-year-olds who visit NBCNews.com to learn about current events would be, by default, misrepresenting their ages. That’s criminal by DOJ standards and would be explicitly illegal under the House Judiciary Committee’s proposal.

We’d like to say that we’re being facetious, but, unfortunately, the Justice Department has already demonstrated its willingness to pursue [Computer Fraud and Abuse Act] to absurd extremes. Luckily, the Ninth Circuit rejected the government’s arguments, concluding that, under such an ruling, millions of unsuspecting citizens would suddenly find themselves on the wrong side of the law. As Judge Alex Kozinski so aptly wrote: “Under the government’s proposed interpretation of the CFAA…describing yourself as ‘tall, dark and handsome,’ when you’re actually short and homely, will earn you a handsome orange jumpsuit.”

One of the time-honored beliefs in photography has always been that photographers take good photos, not cameras. Indeed, such wisdom is just as applicable in this situation, where sports photographer Nick Laham shot a stunning set of portraits in the locker room bathroom with his iPhone.

Our eggs :3

This six-second Easter video is a great example of how journalists can use Vine, a video app, to tell short stories. If you haven’t tried it out, download it and share your video-making fun!

"Quote of the week via @AdamRhew: “I think a good reporter can recognize what he’s..."

“Quote of the week via @AdamRhew: “I think a good reporter can recognize what he’s emotional about — and also can recognize when that emotion is affecting his work.””

-
Former UNC-Chapel Hill student, Adam Rhew, made this statement when he covered the death of UNC’s student body president, Eve Carson.

As a reporter for the campus broadcast station, Carolina Week, Rhew’s work with student government allowed him to befriend Carson.

Their professional relationship made it very likely that Rhew would be emotionally affected upon her death. Emotions that were tied to his lose of a friend and his inward fight in regards to his ability to cover a story that he was closely related to.

How was he supposed to deal with these feelings as a journalist? Isn’t he supposed to separate himself from the subject?

Being separated from the subject

For the sake of credibility and objectivity, journalists are asked to separate themselves from a story by interviewing a variety of subjects they do not know from both sides of the argument. They are also asked not to support their opinions, unless they are writing a column.

However, when it comes to emotions there are no standard guidelines for reporters. This leads me back to Rhew’s statement.

Here’s an extended version of Rhew’s statement as it was introduced in Lee Ann Peck and Guy S. Reel’s “Media Ethics at Work” book.

Rhew realized he would have to balance the emotions of losing a friend with his responsibility to remain objective. “There was a lot of raw visceral emotion that I had to process, but at the same time, I had to process details. sound bites and deadlines,” he said. “My job was to make sure the emotional trauma did not affect my work” While some people might think objectivity means not having emotions, Rhew knew that type of robotic response is neither possible nor desirable. “I think a good reporter can recognize what he’s emotional about-and also can recognize when that emotion is affecting his work.”

Emotions v. Objectivity

Despite Rhew’s connection to Carson, he was able to get past his emotions and get his assignments done.

Yes, it was hard for him, but it just goes to show that journalists have emotions, too. So it wouldn’t be in their best interest to cry on the shoulder of their subject; but, knowing that we are human gives us a little wiggle room when working on a tragic topics.

If you’re still wondering how to deal with your emotions in the next teary-eyed situation, just remember that there are no standards for emotions. But you should always know how to recognize when they are affecting you and work from there.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!! @Oprah @robinroberts...

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!! @Oprah @robinroberts @barbarawalters @andersoncooper @soledad_obrien Some of my favorite journalists in green. Not enough journos do."

During the Muck Rack Twitter chat I attended two weeks ago, Ernie Smith, editor of ShortFormBlog.com, brought up the importance of journalists thinking as their own boss.

Like me, you’re probably wondering “What is thinking like an entrepreneur and how can I start thinking this way?”

To get a better idea about what Ernie meant, I asked him. Here’s how he explained it.

To get an idea of how to start thinking this way, check out this article about business models that will save journalism. It’s an easy read and it will teach you how long-form journalism, breaking news, everyday news, feature, entertainment and educational journalism will likely be preserved.

You may also want to take a look at a book called “Next Generation Journalist” by Adam Westbrook.

Here is Adam’s reasoning behind the book.

By now, you can probably tell that there is a whole different side to journalism that doesn’t normally sit at the forefront of most people’s mind. Instead, it’s a concept that few people recognize or understand.

Want to be a better journalist? Take some time out your day to do what Ernie Smith advised and learn to “Think like an entrepreneur.”

Film Takes Aim at Latino Stereotyping

univisionnews:

Filmmakers call out Latin stereotypes in media, including Warner Brothers’ character Speedy Gonzales.

By CRISTINA COSTANTINI

A new documentary is drawing a direct correlation between the way Latinos are depicted in film and television and hate crimes against the ethnic group.

The filmmakers behind “Latinos Beyond Reel”— Edwin Pagan, Bernardo Ruiz, Alex Rivera, Miguel Picker, and Ronelle Rodriguez Torres—said they were fed up with the negative depiction of Latinos in the media, so they decided to craft their own movie in response.

This seems like an insightful video that will make media consumers more conscience of Latino stereotypes.

"Quote of the week: “If you’re going to do journalism properly, you’re going to be..."

“Quote of the week: “If you’re going to do journalism properly, you’re going to be uncomfortable time and again.””

- Source: Lois Boynton

Today’s chart was chosen for my marketing PR folks. Though it is a broad analysis, it is the first step for deciding how much social media should be built into the promotions of a product or service.
Therefore, if a company’s target audience is younger, it should have a majority of social media engagement, versus traditional email marketing and press releases.
Contrarily, it wants to do the opposite for an older community.
May sound like a given, but knowing the numbers makes a difference.

My Ethics professor, Lois Boynton, said this yesterday during her lecture on loyalties. She explained that some times journalists may have to do things they personally wouldn’t do. Two examples of loyalty my class talked about were taking a picture of someone about to die and designing a controversial magazine spread.

Here is the picture I’m referring to:

This picture was taken when a fire broke out at an apartment in Boston in 1975. At the time, the fire department was about to rescue the children when the fire escape fell from under them.

And the magazine cover:

The model for this magazine is a white, blue-eyed teenager whose skin was tanned for the shoot.

These examples really made me think of all the possibilities of becoming uncomfortable for the sake of being exclusive or to be the first to report an occurrence. Or even for the sake of covering something on deadline.

It also made me wonder how far people allow themselves to go outside their comfort zone in this industry to remain loyal to their editors because we all know journalism isn’t just about storytelling, it’s also a business.

This brings me to these questions for you. How far would you go to be a loyal journalist? And for my more experienced folks, how far have you gone?
